Electronic Stability Program (ESP)
Slick surfaces beware. All 2008 Commander models come standard with advanced Electronic Stability Program (ESP),[1] all-speed traction control, hydraulic brake assist, and Electronic Roll Mitigation (ERM). These systems work together by applying selective wheel braking and engine throttle control to help the driver maintain vehicle directional stability. There are three modes of ESP to choose from: Full-on, partial and full-off, for varying degrees of traction control — the choice is yours.
The 2008 Jeep® Commander also features three new available traction technologies tied to ESP: Hill Descent Control, Hill Start Assist and Trailer Sway Control.
Trailer Sway Control
Please no sway today. The 2008 Commander's available Trailer Sway Control (TSC) system helps reduce trailer sway and improves handling in adverse towing conditions caused by crosswinds and traffic. TSC works with ESP[1] and ABS, alternating brake pressure to automatically correct oscillation in the vehicle-trailer system. TSC does not require any driver input. It automatically activates when needed. The ESP function lamp will flash when TSC is activated. TSC is available on all Commander models in the Trailer Tow Group Class II and the Trailer Tow Group Class IV.Hill Descent Control
Take the slow road down. New for the 2008 Jeep Commander and standard on all 4x4 models, is innovative Hill Descent Control (HDC). Operational in the "4WD Low" position, HDC allows smooth and controlled hill descent on rough or slippery terrain without the driver needing to touch the brake pedal. This system applies the brakes to each wheel individually when needed to reduce forward motion when negotiating down steep grades.Hill Start Assist
A clever climbing tool. Another new available feature for 2008 Jeep Commander is Hill Start Assist (HSA). This feature assists drivers when starting a vehicle from a stop on a hill, by maintaining the level of brake pressure applied for a short period after the driver’s foot is removed from the brake pedal.
- Always drive carefully, consistent with conditions. Always wear your seat belt and obey traffic laws. 2007 Vehicle Shown
Suspension
The short- and long-arm (SLA) independent front suspension on Jeep® Commander gives the driver a greater sense of precision and control while reducing vehicle weight and head toss—all without compromising the vehicle's trademark off-road performance.[2]
