Compass's state-of-the-art Freedom-Drive I™ active full-time 4WD system anticipates the need for added traction on and off road and responds to wheel slippage automatically to help ensure you have a safe and carefree driving experience.

Freedom-Drive I features an Electromagnetic Controlled Coupling (ECC), which constantly monitors wheel slippage and transfers torque to the axle that can use it most. During high-traction driving, like on the highway, the system transfers virtually no torque to the rear axle for improved fuel economy^{en_epa_2008compass_4x2_24L} but instantly transfers torque to the rear wheels when conditions call for it.

The four-wheel-drive “LOCK” mode is recommended for deep snow, deep sand and other low-traction surfaces.

Both the standard full-time and LOCK modes include many standard safety features including:

• Brake Traction Control
• Driver-controlled three-mode Electronic Stability Control^{en_always_drive_carefully} (ESC)
• Brake Assist
• Electronic Roll Mitigation^{en_always_drive_carefully}
• Antilock Brake System (ABS) with rough-road detection.
