The powertrain on the 2012 Compass is designed to deliver world-class performance in all-weather conditions. Fuel economy and refinement, all at an affordable, value-packed price.

The 2012 Compass 4x2 with standard 2.0L engine delivers excellent fuel economy— an EPA estimated 29 highway miles per gallon+— so you can adventure longer.

All of the 2.0L and 2.4L World Engines feature a heavy dose of high-tech:

  • Intake manifold and exhaust flow control valves
  • Dual overhead camshafts
  • Four valves per cylinder
  • Forged crankshaft and connecting rods
  • Aluminum block
  • Acoustic oil pan

There are three available transmissions on Compass:

  • Five-speed manual
  • Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT2) with AutoStick shifter
  • Continuously Variable Transaxle with Off Road Mode(CVT2L) — includes off-road capable crawl ratio

The AutoStick shifter allows for either fully automatic shifting or driver-interactive manual control with six simulated stepped-gear ratios.

    Compass features electronic throttle control , replacing the mechanical throttle linkage. The system provides seamless and consistent engine response, improved fuel economy+ and enhanced integration of vehicle systems - such as the transmission, variable camshaft timing, vehicle speed control and idle speed control.

    Dual Variable Valve Timing

    The 2.0L and 2.4L World Engines feature dual Variable Valve Timing on both the intake and exhaust camshafts for better all-around performance. The electronically controlled timing produces more power, better fuel economy and smoother, quieter operation than engines without dual variable valve timing. Smart.

  • Hill Start Assist
    Hill Start Assist

    Hill Start assist helps drivers when starting a vehicle from a stop on a hill by maintaining the level of brake pressure applied for a short period after the driver's foot is removed from the brake pedal. If throttle is not applied within a short period after the driver's foot is removed from the brake pedal, brake pressure will be released.
