Jeep King of the Mountain Professional Mountain Biking World Championships

Coming August 14th to Camp Jeep, catch the grand finale of the summer's ultimate mountain biking race. Picture this--16 professional riders hurtling through a one-of-a-kind course at blistering speeds, braving a series of tough obstacles before reaching the final finish line-where keys to a pair of 2006 Jeep Commanders and a hefty prize purse awaits the two champions. Not only does the Jeep King of the Mountain Series deliver one of this year's most thrilling and dramatic racing events, it's also one of the richest and most prestigious mountain biking series in the world.

The Riders

A total of sixteen professional and amateur riders compete in three separate races for the Jeep King of the Mountain Series Champion crown. Twelve professional racers--six women and six men-were chosen to compete based on their performance in the 2004 World Cup and World Championships. The final four riders-two women and two men-qualify for each event in the series based on points earned in National Off-Road Bicycling Association (NORBA) events-meaning these wildcard entrants get to ride against world-class pros for a shot at the title. The current lineup includes top international athletes like defending Jeep King of the Mountain Champ Wade Bootes of Australia, famed rider Mike King of San Diego, CA, and the world's top ranked mountain bike racer Michal Prokop of the Czech Republic. The women's side features defending champion Katrina Miller of Australia, all-star racer Tara Llanes of Los Alamitos, CA, and the top female mountain bike racer in the world, Anneke Beerten of the Netherlands.

The Y Course

Described as the ultimate design for mountain bike racing, the series' exclusive "Y" format requires riders to master a diverse set of skills in order to win. In effect, the "Y" fuses two racing formats into one ultra-challenging course. Here's how it works: competitors start out on two separate ends of the "Y" before merging at the midway point into a single track. In the second half of the course, riders must conquer a series of banked turns, tabletops, step-down jumps and rollers before rocketing to the finish line.

The Prize Package

Each individual race offers a prize package of $35,000-totaling over $100,000. Points are awarded at each event and are then totaled after the third and final race. The male and female points leaders at the end of the series will each receive keys to a new Jeep Commander plus a $5000 bonus from John Paul Mitchell Systems. Who will be crowned the winning champs?
